University of Tulsa, 800 S Tucker Dr, Tulsa, OK 74104

Circle Cinema welcomes actor and UTulsa alum Julius Tennon (BFA ’78) back to Tulsa for a special one-night screening of “Riverbend” (1989), alongside actress Vanessa Tate Goodrich and Reelblack’s Michael J. Dennis. The trio will be participating in a Q&A moderated by UTulsa Applied Professor of English & Creative Writing and Media Studies Quraysh Ali Lansana. The film begins at 7 p.m. at Circle Cinema. Tickets cost $13 for members and $15 for non-members.
“Riverbend” follows the story of three Black soldiers who flee from a rigged military court-martial and arrive at the small Southern town, Riverbend, where a brutal, racist sheriff has terrorized the town’s Black community for years. The soldiers, led by Major Samuel Quinton, help organize the townspeople as they stand together against the forces controlling their town.
“Riverbend” has recently been restored in 6K by Reelblack, which has been touring the country for film screenings. Founded in 2003, Reelblack is a Philadelphia-based film production and media company dedicated to promoting Black cinema and preserving Black cultural history. Through their original productions, screenings, interviews, archival programming and more, Reelblack documents, contextualizes and shares stories that have often been overlooked.
